Fall Gardening Checklist

Fall Gardening Checklist

1.      Plant or transplant shrubs. Plant garlic, radishes, scallions, turnips, and winter salad greens. Plant bulbs.

2.      Clean fall leaves from your gutters before the winter rains hit.

3.      Wrap oaks and fruit trees in tanglefoot to protect from caterpillar infestations in the spring.

4.      Give your lawn its final fall fertilizer.

5.      Take semi-hardwood cuttings, perhaps of a favourite rose, a blueberry, or a rosemary plant.

6.      Book a blowout for your irrigation system.

7.      Mulch your garden to provide some winter protection and give it a final boost of fertilizer.

8.      Plant containers and baskets with plants that provide fall and winter-interest like winter heathers, wintergreen, skimmia, violas and ornamental cabbages.

9.      Deep-root fertilize your trees (or ask your landscaper or an arborist to do it).

10.  If you have lots of fuchsia berries making a mess of your deck or walkways, try eating them or make them into jam or jelly.
